According to information from the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services (AASAS) website:
• 1 in 3 girls, and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused by the time they reach age 18.
• Up to 97% of sexual assaults are never reported to police.
• Sexual abuse is the highest police reported violent crime against children and youth.
• 84% of reported sexual assault cases involve an offender who is known by the victim: an intimate partner, an acquaintance, co-worker, friend or relative.
• More than half of all sexual assaults take place in the victim’s own home, or within 1.6 kilometres of it. Another 20% of sexual assaults happen in the home of a friend, neighbour or relative.
• 40-70% of female children and 15-30% of male children with developmental disabilities
You may not know this, but any kind of abuse may possibly cause trauma (PTSD). This kind of trauma may have occurred so early in your life that you think there is nothing you can do about, just live with it, just suffer perhaps. Fortunately there are now two psychotherapeutic approaches that can help you heal from trauma. Specifically, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) can help you.
The World Health Organization recognizes only two trauma-focused psychotherapies —and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the two approaches. EMDR has been recognized by the American Psychiatric Association as a psychotherapeutic approach.
